There will be logistics to work out later. There's no poverty like Appalachian poverty, especially in this era, so what Cricket has to spare is fairly minimal. But he does have a paying job and a place to stay, and that's a fair sight better than some other people can say.
How he'll get Hugh into school if he stays, he has no idea. Or what the alternative is, if he can't. But maybe he can pretend he's a cousin or something...
His reverie is broken when the thrumming starts. At first he thinks little of it, assuming it's just snoring or the poor kid's stomach growling. It becomes obvious there's more going on than that in short order, though, and he stares silently, holding his breath to listen and wonder.
"...Hugh?" He speaks up at last. "Are you a'ight? What's that noise?"
